Turkey Creek Sanctuary: A Nature Lover's Paradise

One of Brevard County's most treasured natural preserves — a boardwalk journey through untouched Florida habitat along the crystalline waters of Turkey Creek.

About Turkey Creek Sanctuary

Turkey Creek Sanctuary is, without qualification, one of the finest natural experiences available in Palm Bay and arguably in all of Brevard County. The sanctuary preserves a stretch of Turkey Creek — a tannic, spring-influenced waterway that runs through central Palm Bay — along with the diverse natural communities that line its banks. Boardwalks carry visitors above the creek and through the surrounding scrub, flatwoods, and hammock habitats without disturbing the sensitive ecosystems below.

Turkey Creek itself is a remarkable natural feature in the middle of what is now one of Florida's largest cities. The creek's tannin-stained, spring-fed water maintains a clarity and character that suburban development typically destroys. The fact that a functioning natural creek system with intact habitat corridors exists within Palm Bay's grid is both a credit to early conservation decisions and a significant quality-of-life asset for the city's residents.

Wildlife and Natural Features

The biodiversity accessible from Turkey Creek Sanctuary's trails is exceptional for an urban setting. Wading birds — great blue herons, little blue herons, tricolored herons, and egrets — are regular presences along the creek banks. Anhingas spread their wings in the trees above the water. Turtles sun themselves on logs in the shallower sections. Alligators inhabit the creek corridor, as they do most of Florida's natural waterways — observed with appropriate respect and distance, they're a reminder that you're genuinely in wild Florida, not a manicured nature-themed park.

The scrub and flatwoods habitats along the sanctuary's upland sections support Florida scrub-jays, gopher tortoises, and a range of plant species adapted to Florida's unique sandhill and scrub ecosystems — habitats that have been significantly reduced by development throughout Brevard County and that the sanctuary helps preserve.

Visiting Turkey Creek Sanctuary

Turkey Creek Sanctuary is located on Port Malabar Boulevard in Palm Bay and is operated by the City of Palm Bay. The boardwalk and trail system is free to access. The sanctuary is open during daylight hours. Early morning visits offer the best wildlife viewing as birds and other animals are most active in the cooler hours. Bring insect repellent — the sanctuary's natural setting means mosquitoes, particularly in summer. The boardwalk is accessible and suitable for most visitors without specialized gear.
